  1. THE POSTER PROGRAM.
  2.  
  3. Version 2.3A 1/18/96.  This version works with Win 3.1, WFW, and Win95.  
  4.  
  5. Note: This version will NOT read files created by Poster 1.x.
  6.  
  7. INTRODUCTION.
  8.  
  9. POSTER 2.3A is the latest version of the popular Windows shareware 
  10. program for making big posters, signs, and banners,  printing them at up 
  11. to 9 feet by 9 feet. All text and graphics are enlarged and tiled over 
  12. multiple pages. POSTER supports all True-Type and ATM fonts, and imports 
  13. graphics from BMP and WMF files, as well as from the Clipboard and OLE 
  14. applications. POSTER supports full color, and most Windows-compatible 
  15. printers. This new version of poster supports complete flexibility in 
  16. the placement of graphics, incorporates many drawing tools and special 
  17. effects (like 3D) for text, and provides better support for non-standard 
  18. poster and paper sizes.

  20. POSTER is great for a wide variety of projects at work, school, home, or 
  21. clubs:
  22. 1. Creating large posters for presentations, projects, charts, etc.
  23. 2. Creating large signs for advertisements, announcements, etc.
  24. 3. Creating banners for special events, etc.
  25. 4. Enlarging pictures, charts, etc. for display.

  28. ADVANTAGES OF POSTER.
  29.  
  30. This program is very easy to use, and it is very simple to create large 
  31. posters and banners.  It is especially useful when you have a number of 
  32. fonts installed, as the font selection menu displays renditions of all 
  33. the true-type fonts. The final poster size is fully configurable.

  82. which is really quite reasonable for a program like POSTER. This fee

  161. INSTALLATION.
  162.  
  163. If you have unzipped the files, then you have practically installed the 
  164. program.  
  165. The package consists of the following files:
  166. 1. This README file.
  167. 2. POSTER.TXT, which is  the documentation for POSTER.  All of this 
  168.    documentation is also in the on-line help file.
  169. 3. POSTER.EXE, which is the poster program itself.
  170. 4. POSTER.HLP, which is the on-line help file.
  171. 5. CTL3D.DLL, the 3d controls library.
  172. 6. Several BORDERx.WMF border files.  These can be imported using
  173.    the Page->Border->From File command.
  174.  
  175. To install the program, do the following after unzipping the poster 
  176. download file:
  177. 1. Create a directory called POSTER.
  178. 2. Copy the files POSTER.TXT, POSTER.EXE, and POSTER.HLP into that 
  179. directory.
  180. 3. Copy the file CTL3D.DLL to your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. 
  181. 4. Create a program manager icon for POSTER by doing the following:
  182.    
  183.     WINDOWS 3.1 or WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS:
  184.     a. Select the program manager group where you want the icon.
  185.     b. Select NEW.
  186.     c. Select Program Item.
  187.     d. In the dialog box, fill in Description ("Poster"), 
  188.         The command line: C:\poster\poster.exe
  189.     The working directory: C:\poster
  190.     If you have unzipped into a different directory, use it instead of 
  191.     c:\poster.
  192.  
  193.     WIN95:
  194.     a. From the START button, click on START, then Settings,
  195.          then Taskbar.
  196.      b. From the "Taskbar Properties" box, click on 
  197.         "Start Menu Options".
  198.     c. Click on NEW.
  199.     d. Enter the full patch name to poster (such as 
  200.        "c:\poster\poster.exe"), or click on the browse button, 
  201.        find the directory with POSTER in it, and click on POSTER.EXE.
  202.     e. Click on Finish.
  203.     f. Select the folder you want the shortcut in, then click on 
  204.        Finish.
  205.     g. Enter the name you want to use for the icon, 
  206.        and click on Finish.
  207.     
  208.  
  209. 5. You may view and print the documentation file, POSTER.TXT, with 
  210. notepad.
  211.       However, this entire document is included in the online help file.

  214. DEINSTALL  (REMOVING POSTER)
  215.  
  216. To remove POSTER from your system, do the following:
  217.  
  218. 1. Find the directory containing Poster.
  219. 2. Delete all files, using erase *.*.
  220. 3. If you want to save the saved poster files, but remove the
  221.    program, then delete the files POSTER.EXE, POSTER.TXT, POSTER.HLP,
  222.    and CTL3D.DLL.
  223. 4. To remove the start icon:
  224.     Windows 3.1: In the program manager, highlight the Poster icon,
  225.         and then hit the DEL key.
  226.     Win95: Click on 'Start', then 'Settings', then 'Task Bar', then
  227.         'Start Text Menu', then 'Remove'.  Find the Poster entry,
  228.         highlight it, and then click on 'Remove'.

  232. USING POSTER.
  233.  
  234. To start using poster, simply double click on the poster icon.  POSTER 
  235. will start and ask you for the poster or banner format. After selecting 
  236. the format you want, it will present an empty page to you.  Just start 
  237. typing to begin making your poster.
  238.  
  239. You can also associate "POS" file types with poster (do this with File 
  240. Manager or Explorer.).  Then, double clicking on a POS file will 
  241. automatically start poster with that file.

  245. PRINTERS.
  246.  
  247. This program has been successfully tested on the following printers: 
  248.     HP Laserjet II and compatibles
  249.     HP Laserjet III - see special setup instructions below.
  250.     HP LaserJet 4 - See special setup instructions below
  251.     HP DeskJet PLUS
  252.     HP DeskJet 500
  253.     Epson dot matrix and compatibles
  254.     Postscript printer - See special setup instructions below
  255.  
  256. If you cannot get POSTER to work properly on your printer, try checking 
  257. the box marked "Method A" in the PRINT dialog box. This should work ALL 
  258. printers (but not plotters).  If this still doesn't work, try "Method 
  259. B".  Also, see the special setup instructions below.

  263. LASERJET III USERS.
  264. If the posters you print are missing characters at page edges, then do 
  265. the following:
  266. 1. Select "Method A" in the Poster Print Dialog box.  Also, be sure your 
  267. printer is set to 300 dpi.
  268.  
  269. LASERJET 4 USERS.
  270. To successfully print posters, you must configure your printer as 
  271. follows:
  272. 1. Select "Printer Setup":
  273. 2. Set resolution to 300 dpi. (At 600dpi, printing takes a very long 
  274. time, and may hang the printer.)
  275. 3. Select "options". 
  276. 4. Select "Graphics Mode" = "raster", "Graphics Quality"="high", and
  277.      check "print true-type as graphics".
  278. If posters still do not print properly, then in the PRINT dialog box, 
  279. check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always work.  
  280.  
  281. POSTSCRIPT PRINTER USERS.
  282. POSTER cannot always automatically switch a postscript printer from 
  283. portrait mode to landscape mode.  If  "Print Preview" shows the printer 
  284. to be in the incorrect mode,use the "Print Setup" menu item to manually 
  285. select the proper mode.

  287. If you get postscript errors, or you are loosing characters at page 
  288. boundaries:
  289. 1. From the control panel, select Printers, then select 'Setup.
  290. 2. Select "options", then select "advanced".
  291. 3. Select "print true type fonts as" "Bitmap (type 3)".
  292. 4. Close the control panel.
  293. 5. Start POSTER.
  294. If posters still do not print properly, or print too slow, then in the 
  295. PRINT dialog box, check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always 
  296. work.
  297.  
  298. COLOR PRINTERS.
  299. POSTER should now properly print color text and graphics.
  300.  
  301. SLOW PRINTING.
  302. Sorry, but Windows printing is s..l..o..w.  I have no good solution for 
  303. this.  Be sure to verify your poster with "Preview" in the "Print" 
  304. dialog box.  Then, have patience while it prints.

  310. Users of POSTER must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
  311. "POSTER is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all
  312. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  313. the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
  314. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or conse-
  315. quential, which may result from the use of POSTER."

  317. POSTER is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  318. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  319. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  320. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  321. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  322. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  323. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  324. useful and find that you are using POSTER and continue to use
  325. POSTER after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
  326. istration payment of $10.  The registration fee will license one copy 
  327. for use on any one computer at any one time.  You must treat this 
  328. software just like a book.  An example is that this software may be used 
  329. by any number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  330. location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  331. being used at one location while it's being used at another.
  332. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
  333. same time.

  336. copies of POSTER within 30 days of first use or their license

  351. TECHNICAL TRIVIA.
  352.  
  353. POSTER is written in C, and complied using MSVC 1.5.  It consists of 
  354. about 15,000 lines of code (proving that it takes a lot of code to not 
  355. do very much).
